About Me

I am an Assistant Professor at Human Genetics Unit (HGU), Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata. I completed my DPhil Degree (a PhD degree at the University of Oxford is called a DPhil) in Human Genetics from the University of Oxford, UK, where I studied the genetic basis of human visible traits, including hair and skin pigmentation. In February 2018, I joined the Centre for Brain Research (advisor: Prof. Ganesh Chauhan), Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru as a postdoctoral researcher, where I worked on several projects leveraging the UK Biobank resources examining the genetic architecture of MRI markers of cerebral small vessel diseases.

In March 2020 (a week before the COVID-19 lockdown was implemented in the UK), I moved to Imperial College London to join the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health. Over nearly 5.5 years of post-doctoral research at Imperial College (advisor: Prof. Ioanna Tzoulaki & Prof. Abbas Dehghan), I contributed to major international collaborations, including projects within the CHARGE Consortium, aimed at identifying genetic determinants of subclinical atherosclerosis using large population-based cohorts. Please see publications lists for further details on the projects. I also served as an Honorary Research Associate in the Department of Cardiology at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London, United Kingdom, from 2021 to 2024.

In recent years, a major focus of my research has been understanding the genetic basis of cardiovascular disease and its risk factors in South Asian populations—an ethnic group that remains significantly underrepresented in large-scale genomic association studies. Through this work, I aim to improve the inclusivity of genetic research and contribute to a more equitable understanding of cardiovascular disease risk across diverse populations.

Outside of research, I am a keen cricketer (201 matches, 4,142 runs at just over 30, with 2 centuries and 24 fifties; 91 wickets at 16.52, best 5/11)—consistent, reliable, and occasionally capable of something special. I also enjoy playing table tennis, tennis, badminton, and cycling.
